University of Victoria | School of Social Work

Welcome to UVic's School of Social Work

The School of Social Work offers a program of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Masters of Social Work (MSW) that is fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. Graduates are employed in a wide range of government and voluntary organizations such as family and children's services, residential care facilities, community centres, mental health clinics, home health care, hospitals, women's services, corrections and Indigenous social services.

In addition to the standard BSW program, Child Welfare, Indigenous, and Indigenous Child Welfare degree specializations are offered. All students are required to complete two practicum placements within their BSW degree, with an option of Prior Learning Assessment for the third year practicum. Undergraduate BSW applications are available online in November each year and are due January 15th.

Our MSW program is designed to provide graduate students an opportunity to reflect on their practice experience in the context of the School's Mission Statement and to develop critical skills and their application to practice and/or research. The School also offers a MSW Indigenous Specialization program for social workers working in Indigenous social service settings.

Within the School of Social Work graduate program, there are three distinct programs that students can choose from leading to a Master of Social Work degree.

  • The MSW standard program is designed to provide graduate students an opportunity to reflect on their practice experience in the context of the School's Mission Statement and to develop critical skills and their application to practice and/or research.
  • The MSW Indigenous Specialization program is designed for social workers working in Indigenous social settings.
  • The new non-BSW entry MSW program (Fall 2010 startup), is designed for qualified applicants with a degree other than social work and will have as its emphasis a community context of practice. Qualified applicants with a degree other than social work have access to this non-BSW entry MSW program.

Graduate MSW application packages will be posted by October 1st and graduate applications are due December 1st.

Blended learning is the dominant approach to learning used at the School, which means that courses are taught through both web based delivery and face-to-face contact with students. Within this approach, students may elect to have most of their learning take place through a more traditional distance model where courses are accessed through web based delivery. A minimum of five consecutive days of face-to-face classroom attendance is required of all BSW students, offered as a component of Social Work 312. Please note that online/distance courses are available only to students residing in Canada.

Alternatively, students may elect to come to campus for a more traditional campus-based approach to learning, comprised of face-to-face sessions with some web based delivery. The School works with students to facilitate completion of field placements in geographic areas of their choice, where feasible.
